What it does

Soil nails are steel bars drilled into a slope face and grouted along their full length, tying loose ground back into the stable material behind it. Combined with a mesh or sprayed-concrete facing, they reinforce cut faces, over-steep banks and slip scarps without large excavation. Every layout is installed to an engineer's design and proof-tested before sign-off.

Methodology

How the work runs

Every stage is matched to the engineer’s design and the conditions found on the face.

  1. 01

    Setout and drilling

    Nail positions are set out to the engineer's layout and holes drilled at the specified angle and depth, by rig or on rope access depending on the face.

  2. 02

    Install and grout

    Steel bars are placed and grouted along their full length so each nail bonds to the ground over its entire depth.

  3. 03

    Facing and plates

    Bearing plates are fitted and the face secured with mesh or sprayed concrete to lock the surface between nails.

  4. 04

    Testing and sign-off

    Selected nails are proof-loaded to the specified test load and the results submitted to the engineer for sign-off.
